This session will take you through the evolution of job scheduling on the IBM i, and advanced capabilities used today where a Universal Scheduler processes jobs on ALL platforms, where all jobs execute in sequence and all the metrics are managed in real time.
As we look back to IBM i installations of the late 1990’s almost everything revolved around and did happen on the IBM i – maybe except for email, but even then there were some that had email on the IBM i as well with Lotus…Then early in the 21st century a lot of ERP’s, applications and platforms began evolving, (still IBM i was among the largest server deployments globally)…As the century progressed a lot of other server platforms came into the picture, this is when the Universal Scheduling Evolution began. For example, we saw WINDOWS and LINUX servers become the prominent Data Collection points for RF gear, Cash Registers, ATM machines, PLC's, Bar Code readers, Fork Lifts, Web Orders, EDI and other connections – what we witnessed was a change of Ordering & Data Collection and the IBM i server becoming the background ERP Server. The days of Lights Out Processing had gone – companies needing real time processing, and most of all real time metrics for all platforms - if you can’t manage it then you can’t monitor it - became a reality.
